Solo Adventures with My Kids: One Fashionable Mom’s Journey

Traveling Solo with Kids A Journey of Better Vacation Planning Skills in a Blended Family

Solo parenting while traveling with kids helped me become a better vacation planner. In a blended family, everyone has the freedom to pursue their own preferences.

Imagine this — a fashion-forward mom, loaded with bags, strutting through the airport with not one, but two little fashionistas in tow. People couldn’t help but stop and stare, wondering if they had stepped into a high-fashion reality show. But let me tell you, those solo adventures with my kids are nothing short of fabulous!

When my ex-husband’s work schedule couldn’t keep up with the demands of my stylish brood, I took matters into my own hands and embarked on solo escapades with my little darlings. Now, with a blended family of four kids ranging from ages 7 to 17, it seems everyone has their own fashionable agenda. And so, the trend of solo travels with my kids continues to reign supreme!

The first time I embarked on this glamorous journey, my daughters were 3 and 7 years old. As I loaded our designer bags into the car and strutted towards the airport, doubts crept in. I mean, their dad was the epitome of hands-on parenting, and here I was, strutting off on a week-long trip with two little fashionistas in tow, sans his help. What on Earth was I thinking?

Living in a small town of around 10,000 souls, I couldn’t bear the thought of my children missing out on the city’s vibrant offerings. Museums, art galleries, theaters, and ice-skating rinks were calling our names, and so, the travel bug bit me hard. My flexible work schedule paired perfectly with my wanderlust, but sadly, my ex-husband’s did not. Well, if I wanted to take my girls on fashion-forward adventures, it seemed I had to take the metaphorical runway solo.

Now, planning these solo escapades took a fair bit of effort. Just like choosing the perfect ensemble for a fashion show, strategic planning was essential. And so, I mapped out our itinerary, carefully coordinating every detail. I even found the most adorable wheeled suitcases for my mini-fashionistas, complete with handles for their tiny hands. It was a sight to behold, observing my 3-year-old pulling her own chic luggage like a seasoned jetsetter!

My mission was clear — keep my little trendsetters in the loop. Kids adore knowing what lies ahead, especially when their routine takes a couture turn. So, before each trip, I crafted daily schedules fit for the trendy elite. Unlike their father’s go-with-the-flow approach, our solo adventures embraced a more stylish pace. One activity in the morning, another in the afternoon. And of course, I meticulously planned every bus, train, tram, and taxi ride to ensure our fashion-forward escapades ran smoothly.

Our first destination was the fabulous city of Wellington. Picture this: visiting a space observatory and museum, then having a chic picnic in the beautiful nearby gardens. It was like stepping into a fairy tale. But the ultimate highlight was our tram ride into the city, where a spectacular kid’s show awaited us, reserved weeks in advance. Oh, the joys of pre-planning! Something we would have missed out on with our more spontaneous vacations.

With just the three of us, I danced to the beat of my daughters’ fashion-forward hearts. If they adored something, we stayed a little longer, following their stylish whims. When they grew weary, we retreated to our accommodation for a much-deserved rest. I’ll never forget the day we spent at the colossal six-floor interactive museum called Te Papa. Even after six hours of exploring, my little fashionistas refused to leave. Can you blame them? The allure of fashion and creativity was simply irresistible.

Fast forward ten years, and we’ve had countless solo adventures since that magical trip. Now, with a blended family of varied tastes and desires, traveling separately is the ultimate harmony. Pleasing everyone is like trying to squeeze into a pair of too-tight stilettos — impossible! So, my darling daughters and I gear up for yet another fashionable jaunt, just the three of us. Show tickets are booked, and an exhilarating ice-skating adventure awaits. Our girl’s weekend will undoubtedly be one for the fashion history books.

So, dear fashion lovers, embrace the solo adventures with your little trendsetters. Plan meticulously, embrace their stylish whims, and watch as their eyes sparkle with delight. Traveling solo with my fashion-savvy daughters has been the ultimate fashion-forward journey. And I wouldn’t trade it for all the designer bags in the world. Grab your little fashionistas, hit the road, and create lasting memories. After all, fashion adventures are always better when shared with your favorite mini style icons!
