Paradise or Luxury: A Tale of Two Cruises

Battle of the Staterooms A $40-a-day Cruise Cabin vs. a $500-a-day Luxury Retreat — Which One Wins and Gets My Repeat Booking?

Comparing a $40-a-day cruise stateroom to a $500-a-day one and my preferred choice

In 2024, there will be a $460-per-day difference between my Margaritaville at Sea and Explora I cabin.

Ahoy, fashionistas! Gather round as I spin my tale of two extraordinary voyages on the high seas. I’ve sailed the waters of elegance and indulgence, exploring the intriguing world of pricey affluence, as well as the more budget-friendly shores. So, break out your sunglasses and let’s set sail!

Margaritaville at Sea’s Paradise oceanview cabin — $40 a night for an old motel

Have you ever dreamed of wasting away in Margaritaville, all while keeping within your budget? Well, my fellow seafarers, Margaritaville at Sea’s Paradise cruise ship offers just that. But let me tell you, this ship is a true paradox. I found myself sailing on a rather lackluster vessel, previously known as the Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line’s flagship Grand Classica. All they did was slap on some fresh paint and call it Margaritaville. Talk about a missed opportunity!

In reality, the Margaritaville identity failed to permeate my 176-square-foot stateroom. Rather than the whimsical beach cottage I had envisioned, I was greeted with what can only be described as an ancient motel room. The aesthetics were way past their prime, with outdated yellowish walls and worn-out wood accents. They couldn’t even jazz up the bathroom, which looked like it belonged in the Middle Ages.

Sure, it had the essentials – a bed and a bathroom – but that’s where the excitement ended. The only hints of “Margaritaville” were in the wallpaper and a few token branded items. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the hairdryer incident. I plugged it in and poof! Half the ship went dark. Not exactly the tropical paradise I had envisioned.

Since my stay, the cruise line claims to have invested millions in renovating their cabins. However, I haven’t seen these changes with my own sea-loving eyes. And frankly, after my less-than-stellar experience, I’d rather walk the plank than give it another try.

Explora Journey’s Explora I ocean terrace suite — $500 a night for a luxury hotel room

Let’s set sail towards the lap of luxury, my stylish shipmates! Ah, the Explora I – a vessel that screams opulence from bow to stern. Owned by MSC Group, this new cruise arm is determined to conquer the world of upscale travel. And boy, oh boy, did they succeed.

As I stepped into my Explora I ocean terrace suite, it felt like I had entered a realm of pure grandeur. This was no ordinary cruise ship cabin; it was a luxurious hotel room on the water. Picture this – a spacious living room, a balcony fit for royalty, and a walk-in closet that would make any fashionista weak at the knees! No more fighting over bathroom counter space – this suite had it all, including a Dyson hairdryer. Talk about the height of sophistication!

The bathroom, with its dark marble countertop and sleek design, felt like a page torn from an architecture magazine. No medieval vibes here – just modern elegance. And oh, the thoughtful touches! Wall-mounted outlets by the bedside, binoculars for spying on passing ships, and even a pull-out Nespresso drawer to satisfy your caffeine cravings. This was a luxury cabin worth every penny of its $500 per night price tag.

Sure, my bed space was a tad tighter than on other ships, but let’s be honest – when you’re living like a king or queen, a little less room to strut your stuff is a small price to pay.

Margaritaville at Sea and Explora Journeys target different customers

Now, my dear fashionistas, as I compare these two remarkable voyages, it’s crystal clear that they cater to vastly different clientele. Hear me out!

At a mere $40 per night in 2024, the Margaritaville floating motel room does hold some appeal for budget-conscious sailors. But alas, it falls short of capturing the true essence of Margaritaville. I’d rather spend an extra $20 and savor a cabin that sparkles like a boutique hotel, not a run-down motel.

On the contrary, the Explora I offers a voyage into hedonistic luxury for those who can spare $3,000 for a six-night journey. This pristine vessel is a testament to fine craftsmanship and impeccable taste. If money is no object, my fashion-forward friends, you won’t find a more lavish floating haven.

But, let us not forget that what you pay is what you get. Those on a tight budget would be wise to explore other affordable cruise options, even if it means settling for an interior stateroom on a more updated ship. Trust me, the disappointment of Margaritaville is not worth it.

As for me, my bank account cannot accommodate the splendor of the Explora I just yet. Oh, but if a mountain of cash should happen to magically appear… Well, let’s just say I wouldn’t mind treating myself to lazy afternoons spent lounging on that spacious balcony.

So, my stylish seafarers, heed my words and choose your high-seas adventure wisely. Whether you set sail on a budget-friendly escapade or bask in the lap of luxury, may your fashion sense shine as brightly as the evening stars on your unforgettable voyage!
