Ah, Mumbai, the land of vibrant colors, rich textiles, and endless inspiration! I embarked on a journey to this bustling city earlier this year, with the hopes of diving deep into India’s exquisite fashion heritage. Little did I know that this trip would bring me closer to my roots and leave me in awe of the fashion wonders I would uncover.

As a British South Asian born and raised in the UK, I’ve always felt torn between two cultures, like a stylish chameleon trying to blend in. But this time, I was determined to bridge the gap and embrace both my Indian heritage and my love for the luxury fashion world.

It seems that my journey of self-discovery resonated with many others from the Indian diaspora. In the creative industry, I’ve come across countless stories of individuals feeling disconnected from their Indian culture, just like I did. Growing up in the UK, I felt like a fashion outsider, not fully connected to British culture, but also struggling to completely fit into my Indian heritage.

But let me tell you, my friends, my trip to Mumbai changed everything. I discovered that the crafts and textiles of India carry the resilience and stories of generations of talented artisans. Handicraft techniques, passed down through the ages, have allowed India to reclaim its rightful place in the global fashion market.

Imagine my delight when I attended the fabulous NMACC opening in Mumbai and met Shri Mohammad Haroon, a master artisan with over 40 years of experience. This Banarasi silk weaver showcased his talents, and I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the intricate craftsmanship. It takes months to weave a single 9-yard piece, and the price? A steal at under $500! These incredible stories of artisans like Shri Mohammad Haroon represent a triumph for India, as it reclaims its heritage from the clutches of the British Empire.

India’s love affair with textiles stretches back thousands of years, my dear fashion enthusiasts. The country’s close relationship with natural fabrics like cotton and silk makes it a fashion powerhouse that European designers have long drawn inspiration from.

From stunning embroidery factories to awe-inspiring fashion shows, India’s influence on the international fashion scene cannot be underestimated. During my Mumbai adventure, the buzz surrounding Dior’s fashion show in the city was palpable. The fashion house, known for its elegance, finally credited India for its inspirations. Bravo! It’s about time these European luxury giants recognized the hands that stitched their exquisite garments, without exploiting their talents and paying them unfairly.

Now, hold onto your fashion hats, my darlings, because in India, fashion is accessible for everyone! Unlike the UK or other parts of the world, where stylish clothes are often a luxury only the wealthy can afford, in India, you can unleash your fashionista spirit without emptying your bank account. From custom-made creations that suit your personal style to top-tier brands that rival the luxurious prices of European designers, the possibilities are endless.

Let me introduce you to the incredible world of Indian designers who are taking the fashion industry by storm. Dhruv Kapoor, the maestro of luxury streetwear, and Malie, with their Scandinavian-inspired silhouettes, are just a glimpse into the treasure trove of talent that India offers. Trust me when I say that their craftsmanship rivals the best of Italian and French designers.

Mumbai, my fellow fashion dreamers, has helped me not only appreciate my culture but also feel proud of my Indian roots. Witnessing the progress of the Indian fashion industry and its recognition on a global stage left me feeling liberated, validated, and bursting with inspiration. I have found my voice, my fashion identity, and my peace with being a British South Asian.

So, my dearest readers, if you ever find yourself yearning for a fashion adventure that unearths the richness of history, the vibrancy of textiles, and the joy of self-discovery, Mumbai should be at the top of your bucket list. Come and embrace this magical city that weaves together the threads of culture, heritage, and fashion like no other.
