The Fashion Trends I’ll Never Embrace: A Gen Z Perspective

Breaking Gen Z Fashion Stereotypes Exploring 3 Fashion Trends I'm Not Quite Ready to Embrace

Low-rise pants, ballet flats, and denim maxi skirts are some of Gen Z’s preferred styles.

As a self-proclaimed member of the fabulous Gen Z community, I must confess: while I am a staunch advocate for most of our trendy fashion choices, some trends from my childhood just don’t resonate with me anymore. I may have an impeccable sense of style, but there are limits to my fashion bravado.

Thanks to the ever-cyclic nature of fashion, we Gen Zers have brought back trends from my golden era of the late 90s and early 2000s. Now, as a 26-year-old who grew up during that magical time, there are some nostalgic fashion choices that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around.

Let’s start with the infamous low-rise jeans. Ah, the era of “Mom Jeans” skits and skin-tight denim domination. High-waisted pants were shunned, and low-rise jeans ruled the world. But as fashion evolved, so did our taste in pants. We embraced the loose, high-waisted wonders of freedom. And while it’s cool to have pants that aren’t constricting, I simply can’t bid adieu to my beloved high-waisted pants. They make me feel like a queen with my belly button securely tucked away.

Now, let’s talk about denim maxi skirts. They were all the rage when I was just a young and innocent elementary school student. I fondly remember owning one before they magically disappeared from the trendy fashion scene. But lo and behold! They have resurfaced with the vengeance of a TikTok obsession. Celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski and Gigi Hadid are flaunting these calf-length denim delights, and my TikTok’s For You Page is constantly haunted by their presence. While I can appreciate their cuteness, my elementary school memories are still fresh in my mind, leaving me uncertain about adding one to my wardrobe anytime soon.

Now, let’s twirl our way into the controversial realm of ballet flats. These dainty footwear wonders have also made a grand comeback, according to The New York Times. Now, I don’t have an inherent aversion to ballet flats like I do with denim skirts and low-rise jeans. It’s just that they don’t quite fit my personal style. I don’t envision myself gracefully pulling them off, and they don’t strike me as the most practical choice, especially when I’m strutting through the vibrant streets of New York City. Trust me, the concrete jungle is a treacherous terrain for delicate flats. The wear and tear, the dirt, and the smell of walking sans socks all contribute to my skepticism.

So there you have it, my fellow fashion enthusiasts! While I may be a Gen Z devotee through and through, there are just some trends that I won’t be embracing. I’ll stick to my high-waisted pants, bid adieu to the denim maxi skirts of yore, and let my feet enjoy the comfort of sneakers as I conquer the city streets.
